When the light from the sun shines through the atmosphere, which is made up of lots of different gas molecules, the light is scattered in a certain way (this is called Rayleigh scattering). The blue light is absorbed by the gas molecules and then scattered in different directions all around the sky. Since you see the blue light from everywhere overhead, the sky looks blue.
