      good question, it was probably a way of expressing emotion, before we could talk. That is still true for babies and infants.

      There’s a connection between the tear duct and human part of the brain that involved in controlling emotions. Tears produced when we cry have a different chemical composition than when we produce tears to keep our eyes moist and they taste more salty.
