      So let’s break down what it means.

      e = Energy
      m = Mass
      c = The speed of light.

      Stuff has lots of energy stored inside of it, tremendous amounts in fact. If you could turn a bottle of water into all the energy stored in it then you’d be able to power a city for ages! We can find out how much energy is stored in a bottle of water using the equation e = mc2

      Say a bottle of water has mass of 1 kilogram.
      Then we say m = 1.
      We know the speed of light is c = 300,000,000.
      Now we can do the sums:

      e = 1 x 300,000,000 x 300,000,000
      = 90,000,000,000,000,000 joules of energy.

      So there is enough energy tied up in a large bottle of water to power the entire world for an entire hour. If only we could unlock it..
