This is a question that I’ve had real problems with!
In my opinion, testing makeup on animals is wrong. A European wide ban on make up that has been tested on animals came into effect recently.
Testing cures for cancer or serious disease on animals I think is justified if it is done properly.
Testing psychological (mind) experiments on chimps and apes is wrong I think – we don’t need the information that badly that we can make those guys suffer so much.
There is a definite grey area though, its a really tricky question!
Fundamentally, I don’t think it is right to harm animals but see it as a necessary evil in the development of vaccines and drugs that can help prevent or cure disease not only in people but in animals themselves. There is a law that helps to ensure that experimental animals are properly treated and looked after.
Unfortunately, a lot of animals come to harm through neglect by their owners or people just not realising what an animal needs to stay healthy.
I think that so much good has come from testing done on rats and other animals towards human work in medicine, that it is justified in this case. There are a lot of procedures in place to make sure that animals aren’t unnecessarily harmed or badly treated. However, I don’t think it is fair to test make up and other products on animals.
For certain purposes I’m completely against animal testing for example cosmetic testing – a law has actually been passed this week where the european union has banned the sale of cosmetics with animal-tested Ingredients.
However, often in drug development and genetics experiments, I believe it is a necessary evil, like Janet.
It should be restricted to only medicines that can help improve lives or save them. Not something as pathetic as makeup. Saying that this isn’t true is like saying that a mouse shouldn’t be harmed to save the life of a human child
