Usually you have to do a science degree which takes between 3-4 years. Then you can go on to be a scientist who helps other scientists or carries out tests etc. If you want to be a scientist who does new research and discovers new things, then you have to do a PhD research project which takes another three years
I agree with Simon, at the very least you will have to do a degree at University, which is 4 years studying. In ecology work, it helps to gain experience by volunteer work in your spare time as well.
For me, it’s taken about 10 years to train as a Clinical Scientist if you count A levels (2 years), undergraduate degree (4 years) and then training (4 years) – it does seem like a long time when you say it like that!
