Most of the time, I collect samples from animals that are naturally sick to study disease. Very occasionally I have been involved in an experiment where we have vaccinated some ponies then, to test whether the vaccine works, we have deliberately tried to infect them with ‘flu and taken snot and blood samples, which hurts a bit (I know because I give blood). We always tried to be as nice as possible to the ponies and not let them get upset about us taking blood samples from them, and we learnt a lot about how to make better vaccines.
